Oil refinery in Ras Tanura, Saudi Arabia captured by WorldView-3.A lot of people ask me, “Shea, what exactly do you do?” Now, I could give them a long speech about working for the leading satellite imagery company on the planet, and that we do cool stuff like put satellites in orbit and collect the images your Uber driver uses to get you home. But instead of boring them with all the nerdy technology talk, I usually stick with, “I help oil and gas companies map stuff” and leave it at that. But today, you get the long spiel with lots of nerdy details about what I do – it’s my baby, called Spatial on Demand – with emphasis on what’s new for 2017. Oil and gas projects are fueled (get it?) by data. But it’s never as simple as just finding data, plugging it in and going to work. You want to organize different data sets across your organization and make sure they’re properly integrated into your GIS software and web apps. You want to make sure that your GIS analysts, landmen, geologists, geophysicists and engineers are all on the same page looking at the same data. Last but not least, you want to make sure you don’t buy the same data sets over and over again. What’s the solution for all of the above? Spatial on Demand. In simple terms, it’s a platform that instantly and accurately delivers the richest, most accurate energy-related public and private datasets through a single cloud-based online database. We help energy customers map their assets, store and manage their geospatial data, and provide the best and most up-to-date data to make key business decisions—all while keeping an eye on efficiency and accessibility across their organization. Since 2009, energy companies around the world have used Spatial on Demand as their enterprise-wide geospatial data management and delivery system to reduce management and operational costs, streamline workflows to improve efficiency, and create a global resource for users to access content within their geospatial software or proprietary web portals. And we’re really excited about the many improvements we’ve made for 2017. We’ve incorporated several updated, professional-grade DigitalGlobe imagery offerings into Spatial on Demand, including:
  • DigitalGlobe Imagery. Designed to be your fast-performing and primary view of the world and built on Mapbox technology, this basemap delivers 30cm to 60cm resolution with Atmospheric Compensation applied—meaning you see less haze and a clearer view of your operations.
  • DigitalGlobe Most Recent. An enhanced map layer that provides the most recent imagery available from DigitalGlobe satellites, with full metadata and accuracy specifications. It’s updated daily for the United States and the globe, which means you have the most current view of your assets and competition in your operating areas—think Permian, Eagle Ford, Marcellus, Utica, Bakken, DJ/Niobrara, Woodford, Anadarko, etc.
  • DigitalGlobe Best Resolution. A new basemap concept for 2017 that offers 30 cm-only imagery from DigitalGlobe’s WorldView-3 (and soon WorldView-4) satellite. This supplemental basemap gives you access to over 250,000,000 km2 of 30 cm satellite imagery for increased confidence in decision making.
DigitalGlobe has partnered with Mapbox to curate and enhance our own versions of street maps and terrain basemaps for Spatial on Demand.
  • DigitalGlobe StreetMap is packed with amazing detail and frequent updates (based on its OpenStreetMap foundation) for a real “local knowledge” perspective. A transparent version allows you to create your own hybrid basemaps as well.
  • DigitalGlobe Terrain turns any map into a detailed, aesthetically pleasing terrain map with shaded terrain and contours and OpenStreetMap reference vectors.
Lastly, we’ve updated our foundation layers and our download portal with some valuable new options, including:
  • Updated NAIP Imagery
  • Texas 2015 Statewide Orothoimagery Project Imagery
  • NOAA Weather layers
  • USGS Benchmarks
  • USGS NED updates
  • The Spatial on Demand Download (Clip, Zip, and Ship) Portal has been updated with a new interface, performance improvements, and new capabilities. This secure web portal allows you to discover, explore, select and download geospatial data from our Spatial on Demand library.
These updates for 2017 make Spatial on Demand an even more essential tool for 21st century oil and gas exploration. So what are you waiting for? Contact us today for a demonstration showing how Spatial on Demand can help your organization.
